Violaine CARRÈRE
God save the cream

Rencontres de la jeune photographie internationale 2024
Special edition – 30 years on?
God save the cream is a project born of the fusion of stained glass and photography. Indeed, having worked as an advertising still-life photographer for over 10 years, Violaine Carrère has never ceased to imagine a bridge between this photographic specia- lity and the art world. She has turned this complicated relationship into a strength, hijacking photographs of cosmetic textures and giving them a new lease of life by placing them in stained-glass windows. Once removed from its context, surrounded by lead and glass, the
still life, photographed in macro and further enlarged, becomes a kind of sculpture born under X, freeing itself from its commercial parentage. No longer mayonnaise, shaving cream or moisturizer, we see only majestic, sinuous forms. It’s an experience in which the result is as important as the creative process itself.
Practical information

Biography
Violaine Carrère is a studio photographer specializing in still life. Her atypical universe is characterized by a plastic vocabulary that we might be too quick to judge as factitious. With her use of digital technology, strange materials and light management, she succeeds in creating the illusion of an unreal setting. In addition to her advertising commissions for clients in the luxury goods sector, she takes her creations beyond the studio to the gallery. Always eager to renew her vocabulary and techniques, Violaine has recently added a new medium to her photo practice: stained glass.
