Beyond the limits
The result of a creative residency supported by the town of Le Bourget and the French Ministry of Culture in anticipation of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, at the invitation of La Capsule – center photographie au Bourget and the Collège International de Photographie du Grand Paris, the Métaformance series is in line with my documentary work focusing on our relationship with our living environment. Our refusal to set our own limits to our presence on the land has serious consequences for the landscapes we inhabit, affected by megafires(Paradise, 2020- 2023).
With Métaformance, I turn the lens towards another landscape and another limit: the inner landscape of our desires for performance and the limit of our own body. Indeed, how can we imagine that we can maintain a lasting relationship with our environment to preserve the world’s habitability, if we fail to adjust to the realities and boundaries of our bodily envelope? Métaformance invites us to explore this inner landscape, our quest to go ever higher, through the symbol of ascent and performance: climbing.

Biography
Artist-researcher and photographer Maxime Riché (b. 1982) lives and works in Paris. In work he describes as “speculative documentary”, he explores our refusal to accept physical and philosophical limits, and the consequences for the world’s habitability.
In 2020 and 2021, he travels to the fire-ravaged Californian town of Paradise, thanks to the Cnap documentary photography grant. Here, he constructs a parable about our ability to rebuild ourselves after fires such as those now affecting the whole world. The book Paradise was published in summer 2024 by André Frère Éditions. In 2023-2024, he was artist-in-residence at La Capsule and the International College of Photography in Paris for a creation on body augmentation in sport for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Maxime is a member of Tendance Floue and the editorial board of EPIC magazine. He has collaborated with GEO, M le Magazine du Monde, Wired and counts among his clients OXFAM, the SNCF group, Volkswagen/DDB° and Webedia, among others.
