Invitation to the Maison François Méchain

La Maison François Méchain, a non-profit organization founded in 2020, offers artists and writers residencies in rural areas. Officially supported by the French Ministry of Culture and local authorities, it welcomes visual artists, photographers and writers who benefit from a privileged time and place to work. The project is to create an open space for sharing and encounters, where creative practices can flourish. It is located 8 km from Saint-Jean-d’Angély in Charente-Maritime, in a former 18th-century dwelling where artist and photographer François Méchain lived and worked for over 40 years.

MissV

Born in 1980, she lives and works in Limoges. After a 10-year career in the theater, she left everything behind to enter the École supérieure d’art de Limoges (DNSEP). Trained in photography by Nicolas TREATT, Gérard RONDEAU, Pierrot MEN and Denis DAILLEUX, she attaches particular importance to analog processes and the poetics of the accident. She photographs 4-handed with Clément DELPÉRIÉ for the [Just] Kids project (the first part of which was presented in 2018 at the Festival des Francophonies). In 2021, she will continue her research in residency at La Maison François Méchain.
I grew up in Oradour-sur-Glane. It was on the forbidden images of the ashes of the 1944 massacre that I had to (re)build. I use photography as a way of writing and as a support for the latent image. Like a breakthrough into another world, the ghostly image allows me to shed light on souls that appear to me and leave me speechless. I search for this unique moment, the appearance of this imagined thing, then try to reveal it, to keep it alive, in light. If I’ve done everything to avoid an accident, today, in the silence of the darkroom, I’m waiting for it.

Sandrine Rodrigues

Sandrine Rodrigues was born in 1975. She lives and works in Saint-Jean-d’Angély (Charente-Maritime). Trained in art history, sociology and visual arts, she teaches visual arts in secondary schools. She has several exhibitions and Artist Residencies to her credit, including in Toulouse, espace PREP’ART, festival Traverse; in 2013 in Rouen, Entrée libre#3, itinéraire d’art contemporain; in 2011 in Poitiers, residency at L’Appart, En attendant les cerises productions, shooting of the video ABSOLITUDE with Morgan DALAVAN, MO compagnie and in Clermont-Ferrand at the Vidéoforme festival.
My questions concern space, the body and mobility in an individual and social dimension of lived and perceived space. The video installation presented at the Pavillon Grappelli in Niort questions the very nature of the image and the conditions of its perception: still image, moving image, plastic play with the projection medium (the straw-bale wall) combine with the history of painting and representation to blur the viewer’s gaze, inviting him or her to take a slow, contemplative look at a work that both reveals and conceals itself.
