Zuhause (2017-2020)

In autumn 2017, I moved with my daughter Emma to Eisenbahnstraße, in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. That’s where we’ve been living ever since. This move raised a recurring question in my immediate circle: why, as a recently single mother, didn’t I want to return to my native country?
This question seemed to preoccupy those around me so much that I began to wonder about the meaning of the word “Zuhause”. In German, “Zuhause” means “at home”. At home in the sense of an intimate space, but also in a broader sense the street, neighborhood, city or country where you live. There isn’t really a French equivalent.
Indeed, what exactly is this “Zuhause” for me? Is it a place, a language, a landscape, a feeling? Is it where I am, or where I come from, where I was born?
In response, I began to photograph everything around me that, in one way or another, echoed my image of “Zuhause”.
Where can you feel at home?

Cabaret (2012-2022)

In the cabaret of everyday life, we see players wearing masks.
They hide almost nothing; we see their fears, we see their desires. Everyone plays a role. There has been crime and there has been love. Some of the traces left by the players remain.

My work is always a collaborative process, however, this partnership can be very different for each image. I often work closely with friends who are artists, designers and stylists. But I’m also passionate about photographing strangers.
In many ways, photographing someone you don’t know is easier, it’s like the very beginning of a relationship – it’s just easier. The immediacy of meeting someone, without any background or emotion involved, represents the simplest pleasure of a simple encounter.
The most important thing for me when collaborating is respect. It’s about preserving the integrity of the model and highlighting the creator’s intention. To achieve this, a certain level of tenderness is required. When I photograph my friends, we take the whole day off and I end the day by cooking them a meal at my place. When I photograph a stranger, it’s rare for that first meeting to be the last. I don’t just want to make an image. I want to have an experience with my model.
I shoot in medium format rather than digital. Working in medium format simply allows me to spend more time on the creative process.
It’s like learning a new language, and it’s very important for me to get out of my comfort zone. There’s a natural excitement in doing something new.
