Thomas PENDELIAU
The fifth season
To 25 May
Rencontres de la jeune photographie internationale 2024
Special edition – 30 years on?
The fifth season is a series of generated composite images that unfolds a science-fiction narrative set in Marseilles in the near future. Using a documentary style, this series speculates on our future modes of adaptation to climate upheaval. Borrowing from both utopia and dystopia, the world revealed is damaged but resilient. The images invite us to dive into this universe, to explore this landscape and create our own fictions.
Thomas Pendeliau’s Fifth Season takes a holistic approach to ecology, linking the environment to other forms of ecology. And yet, the image itself is an ecology that needs to be understood in a transversal way, and our imaginations of the future are intrinsically linked to the images we consume on a daily basis.

Biography
Thomas Pendeliau is a French visual artist based in Arles. After studying art history and archaeology, he entered the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie, graduating in 2022. During his studies at the ENSP, he gradually turned away from photography as an end in itself, considering the image as data to be manipulated using contemporary digital techniques.
His artistic practice is based on a transversal analysis of ecological issues, be they environmental, social or of the order of human subjectivity. Through the medium of science fiction, he explores the potential of images to question our imaginations of the future.
In 2023, he took part in the Image- sIN Artist Residency (ENSP, Le BAL, Jeu de Paume). In 2022, he exhibited at the Panorama de la jeune photographie européenne at the Centre d’art Lumière d’Encre, and at the WIP group show as part of the Rencontres d’Arles festival. In 2020, he proposed a holographic work for the group exhibition 1 mètre au Palais in Arles, and the same year he took part in the Vues et données symposium at the ENSP.
