The Encounters of Young International Photography Artist Residency takes place in Niort, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region (France). Niort is located on the edge of the Marais Poitevin, near the Atlantic coast, between Nantes and Bordeaux.
Every year, the Artist Residency welcomes emerging international photographers with a wide variety of approaches, selected based on their portfolios. This year, they will be mentored throughout their stay by the duo Simon Brodbeck and Lucie de Barbuat.
They receive technical support from the team at La Villa Pérochon—a center for contemporary photographic art managed by the association Pour l’Instant—as well as from two printers at the Picto lab (through a skills-based sponsorship). A technical facility, equipped with professional gear including a black-and-white film darkroom and a digital workshop, is reserved exclusively for them. With this support, the photographers are invited to create and experiment. This is a true carte blanche, fueled by encounters, exchanges, and the sharing of experiences drawn from each participant’s very different backgrounds. It is a unique artistic experience!
Artist Residency dates: March 26 through April 12, 2027 (inclusive)
The selection jury will be chaired by Simon Brodbeck and Lucie de Barbuat and will include prominent figures from various fields of contemporary photography (documentary, fine art, etc.). The Artist Residency is open to six emerging international photographers, regardless of age or background, and across all artistic styles. For logistical reasons, only individual applications will be accepted.

Simon Brodbeck and Lucie de Barbuat
Brodbeck & de Barbuat (Simon Brodbeck and Lucie de Barbuat) are an artist duo who work with photography and video. Since 2005, their work has explored the concepts of landscape, memory, and perception, blending a conceptual approach with a poetic dimension. Playing with space-time and light, they create images in which reality constantly engages with the imagination. Attentive to the history of photography and the evolution of technology, they regularly incorporate experimental or hybrid practices to explore how these innovations transform our relationship with images and our daily lives.
Residents at the Villa Medici from 2016 to 2017, they are graduates of the École nationale supérieure de la Photographie in Arles and the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales. They are recipients of the national photography commission Image 3.0 (Jeu de Paume / CNAP), the Prix Jeune Création, the HSBC Prize for Photography, and the Images Vevey Festival.
Their work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Fotomuseum in Antwerp, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, the Villa Medici, and the Institut français du Japon, as well as in group exhibitions including the Rencontres d’Arles, the Arsenale in Venice, the Cairo Biennale, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, and the Mucem in Marseille, among others.
Both are guests of honor at the 2027 Encounters of Young International Photography.
SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION
The application package must include:
- A biography and a resume
- A portfolio showcasing the two most representative series of your previous work
- A statement of intent explaining what you would like to do during the Artist Residency or, at the very least, what you expect from it. The project does not need to be very detailed, but it must demonstrate that it is feasible within the allotted time (about ten days).
